Technical audits

Independent Django & Wagtail technical audits

I review your Django or Wagtail application's code and technical setup, explain what I find, and recommend what to change. We go through the report together so you can ask questions and decide what to do first.

Who this service is for

You might be a founder planning the next version, an agency that wants a second pair of eyes, or a team that wants to understand its application better. An audit also helps when you're preparing a handover or planning an upgrade.

How the service works

For example

You want to add features to an application that's been running for a few years. I review the relevant code and work out what has to change to support them. We go through the findings together before you commit to the build.

This is an example. We'll work out the details for your project together.

  1. We decide what you'd like to learn

We start with your questions and plans. You might want to understand performance, prepare an upgrade, or see how easily the application could take a new feature. Then we focus the review on what you need to decide.

What you get: A review plan built around the questions that matter to you.

  2. I get to know the codebase

You introduce me to the application and the people who work on it. I review the code, dependencies, tests, deployment setup, and documentation, using a development or test environment where appropriate.

What you get: An explanation of how the application works and which parts the review will cover.

  3. I investigate your questions

I trace the relevant features in the code and measure performance where useful. I note what already works well and what I'd change, with examples drawn from how you use the application.

What you get: Specific observations based on your code and how your project works.

  4. We turn findings into a practical plan

I write up the findings with examples and recommendations. We compare the options and put the most useful work first, so you can see the smaller improvements and the longer-term direction.

What you get: A readable report with recommendations in order of priority.

  5. You know what to change and why

We walk through the report together, so you understand the findings and how they affect your plans. I answer your questions and help turn the recommendations into tasks for your developers. Your team can take the plan from there, or I can help put it into practice.

What you get: Clear priorities you can act on, with the reasoning and technical detail to guide the work.

What you get

  • A written review of the code and technical areas we chose together.
  • Concrete examples, explanations, and recommendations ordered by value to your project.
  • A walkthrough with you or your team, with time for questions and planning.

How we’ll work together

We shape the audit around your goals and agree on the areas to review before we begin. My focus is practical software development: code quality, architecture, performance, accessibility, testing, and maintainability.

Relevant experience

I've worked independently since 2007 and delivered dozens of projects. I've seen small websites, applications maintained for years, and codebases passed between teams. I'm a Django Software Foundation member and maintain open source packages. When I review your code, I look at what it would take to maintain and change it myself.

Questions about Technical audits

What can a Django or Wagtail audit cover?

I can look at architecture, code quality, dependencies, tests, deployment, performance, and accessibility. The starting point is what you want to learn and the decisions you're planning to make.

Will I understand the report if I'm not a developer?

Yes. I explain in plain language what the findings mean for your project. Your developers still get the technical detail they need to work from.

Can my agency take part?

Yes. Your developers know the application, and what they know makes the review better. We can discuss the findings together, and I'll give them a practical plan to work from.

Can you help with the improvements afterward?

Yes. I can put the recommendations into practice, pair with your developers, or review their changes. We can choose the next steps together during the walkthrough.
