Project oversight
Independent technical oversight of your web project
I work on your side when you hire a web agency. I review their proposals, estimates, and delivered work, and explain their technical choices in plain language, so you don't need a technical background to manage the project. Together we weigh the options so you can decide what to approve.
Who this service is for
You might be a founder, business owner, or manager commissioning a website or application from an agency. If you want to be sure you're getting what you pay for, with an experienced developer beside you, this service is for you.
How the service works
For example
You've found an agency to build your new website. You know what you want it to do, and you want to be sure their technical choices are sound and their estimates are realistic. I join your team, help you ask useful questions, and stay involved as the website takes shape.
This is an example. We'll work out the details for your project together.
We discuss your project and my role
We talk through your plans, budget, and the agency's proposal. I learn what matters most to you and where you'd like a technical view. We agree how I'll take part alongside you.
What you get: A technical partner who understands your goals and represents your interests.
We work through the proposal together
I review the proposed approach, estimates, and deliverables. We discuss what each choice means for your budget and the site's future, and take clear questions back to the agency.
What you get: You understand what's in the proposal and what to ask the agency.
I review decisions during the build
I join project reviews and assess technical decisions and proposed changes. I ask the agency to explain the options and their costs, then tell you in plain language what's going on and what each option means for you.
What you get: Regular, independent advice throughout the build.
We review the work before you sign it off
I check demos, code, and deliverables against what you and the agency agreed. We discuss what's ready and what to ask them to refine, then work with the agency toward a result you're happy to accept.
What you get: A clear view of what meets the agreed requirements and what the agency still needs to finish or adjust.
You accept the handover knowing what's in it
I check the source code, access, documentation, and support arrangements in the handover. We go through what you need to run the project and work with your agency after launch, and I can stay on as your technical advisor.
What you get: The access and information to manage your project, with an independent advisor on your side.
What you get
- Independent reviews of proposals, estimates, and technical decisions.
- Clear questions and feedback to take to your agency.
- Support through project reviews, delivery, and handover.
How we’ll work together
I work for you and bring an independent technical view, while keeping the relationship with your agency constructive. It helps most when the people running the project on your side aren't technical. You make the decisions; I make sure you understand the options and I check the details. Together we choose the meetings and review points where I'm most useful.
Relevant experience
I've built Django and Wagtail applications and maintained them for years after launch. That experience helps me judge an agency's choices with long-term maintenance in mind.
Questions about Project oversight
Are you working for me or the agency?
For you. I represent your interests and give you an independent view. I also work constructively with the agency so everyone understands your goals and expectations.
Can you help me choose an agency?
Yes. We can review proposals together, compare technical approaches, and prepare questions for each agency. Then I'll help you choose the one that fits your project.
Can you join a project that's already underway?
Yes. We start by talking through where things stand and the decisions ahead. I'll get to know the project and join in where a technical view helps most.
How is this different from a technical audit?
An audit is a focused review of an application, with recommendations. Project oversight means working beside you through the project, from proposals and decisions to delivery and handover. We can include an audit when it would help.
