WordPress to Wagtail migration

WordPress to Wagtail migration

I move WordPress sites to Wagtail CMS and turn page-builder layouts into reusable content blocks. We look at the pages you publish and the plugins you rely on, then plan how the new site should work.

Who this service is for

You might be a founder, independent publisher, agency, or team planning a move from WordPress. You want custom features or more control over how editors create and publish content, on a more robust, modern CMS.

How the service works

For example

Your WordPress site has a growing article library and landing pages built with a page builder. Keeping layouts consistent takes extra work, and plugin updates need careful coordination. I move the content to Wagtail and build reusable blocks that let you create new pages in a consistent design.

This is an example. We'll work out the details for your project together.

  1. We look at how you use WordPress

We review your posts, pages, custom post types, media, and categories. You show me your publishing routine, and I check the theme, page builder, plugins, and integrations. Then we decide what to keep and where a simpler approach would help.

What you get: A shared migration plan covering your content, design, and the features you use.

  2. I create the editing tools you'll use

I build Wagtail page types and reusable blocks for your articles and landing pages. We try them on your real content and work through tasks such as adding a new section or publishing a campaign page.

What you get: Reusable blocks your editors have tried on real articles and landing pages.

  3. I bring your content into Wagtail

I import the posts, pages, images, authors, and categories we've agreed to move. I map page-builder layouts and shortcodes to Wagtail blocks, then check formatting, dates, media, and links. We review sample pages together.

What you get: Migrated content you can edit in Wagtail, with a repeatable import ready for the final sync.

  4. I check the details before launch

I keep the URLs that matter and redirect the ones that change. I carry over relevant SEO titles and descriptions, check canonical URLs and the sitemap, and test forms, integrations, accessibility basics, and performance on key pages.

What you get: A tested site with URL redirects and checked search metadata.

  5. You create new pages with tools built around your content

Your WordPress site stays live while I build the Wagtail site. We agree on launch timing, and I run the final content sync and switchover. I show your editors how to use the new blocks and publishing tools, so you can create consistent pages from your designs. I usually stay on to maintain and improve the site.

What you get: Your content in Wagtail, reusable tools for publishing new pages, and a developer to keep looking after the site.

What you get

  • A Wagtail website with reusable content blocks and a consistent design.
  • Migrated content and media, a tested import process, and redirects for changed URLs.
  • Editor training, launch checks, and a plan for maintenance and future improvements.

How we’ll work together

We plan around your WordPress setup, including any page builder, custom plugins, or connected services. We work through representative pages early, so you can see how your content will look and how editing will work in Wagtail. I build from your existing design or layouts supplied by your designer.

Relevant experience

I build Wagtail sites and the Django features around them, then maintain them as they grow, often for years after launch.

Questions about WordPress to Wagtail migration

Can you migrate page-builder content and shortcodes?

Yes. I review the layouts and shortcodes your site uses and map them to Wagtail blocks or templates. We go through representative pages together early on and adjust the mapping where something looks wrong.

What happens to my WordPress plugins?

I look at the job each plugin does and recommend how to build that feature in the new site. Forms, search, and other features can use Wagtail, Django, or an external service. We plan commerce, memberships, and similar integrations around how you use them.

Can we keep the design and existing URLs?

Yes. I can carry your design into new templates and preserve the URL structure where practical. If a page address changes, I set up a redirect and check internal links and search metadata before launch.

Will Wagtail make the site faster and easier to maintain?

That depends on how the site is built, not only on the CMS. With Wagtail, I can build the templates and features your site needs. I check database queries, assets, and hosting, then measure performance on representative pages. We also plan regular maintenance.
